The entry for adverb in the OED has the following quote:
1620 FORD Linea Vitæ (1843) 64 This man not only liues but liues well,
remembring alwayes the old adage, that 'God is the rewarder of
aduerbes not of nownes.'
Anyone care to hazard a guess what that means?

Maybe something like "it's not what you do, but how you do it"? |

Cue STS: "It's not what you do, it's the way that you do it."

No need for guesswork. "God pays you for how you act, not what you
are."
