Was it Clauswitz who said, If in doubt, do nothing? Sommat like that.
Stormy used to say, back when he was alive, needless to say, Shit
happens, and Kevin, my former roommate, always used to say, In the
rack, nothing can go wrong. Make no decision on this, then, Charles,
but leave things as they are? Is that it? I must say that making
decisions has never been my strong suit.

Clauswitz is deluding himself if he thinks one can choose to do nothing...as
another philosopher, Geddy Lee, so astutely pointed out: "if you choose not to
decide, you still have made a choice"....r

Agreed.
The possibility of "doing nothing" is about as implausible as that the
natural state of a body is at rest.

Very likely that wasn't quite what he said, since I didn't Google or
anything of that sort. It is impossible to do nothing, even for a
Buddhist monk, yes, but it is not impossible to allow the status quo
to remain as is.

The difficultly with making decisions is that only rarely does one
have all the facts, a knowledge of all the resultant possibilities,
and so forth, for the various choices presented. When I worked for the
government we used to talk about the knowns, the known unknowns, and
the unknown unknowns. It is impossible to get a grip on the last of
these so there is no point worrying about them, but if I do my
homework I should know what the knowns are and have some idea of the
known unknowns for a particular set of choices.
