In case you haven't seen the news about the Midwest's weather, here are
a few pictures.

Love it, Maria! -- A luxury I can afford from this distance. Did we
know you drove a ute? Something tells me you haven't got a gun-rack
in the cab, though.

Just so's you get a model release for them before you do.

No gun rack, and we call it a pickup truck. I've mentioned it before,
IIRC. (I thought a "ute" was more like a Jeep.)

By the way, I've just added another picture to the page -- it was taken
about 15 minutes ago. It shows that the snow hasn't stopped yet.

"April Snow" would be a good name for a local news anchor. On the

weekends, she could come in early and do the weather while the regular
guy was off toothing at the Starbucks.

We just hope you did not leave the truck

It does look like the lights are on, doesn't it? However, it was just
the reflection from the camera's flash.

Some years ago (I think in 1997), there was a blizzard in Boston on
the night before April Fool's Day. It was an exquisitely appropriate
(but, no, not ironic) end to a nearly snow-free winter.

Chardon, Ohio (AKA the buckle of the snow belt), got 18 inches of snow
yesterday. At my house, less than 20 miles away as the snow flies, it
rained and/or snowed for two and a half days, but there was no snow
accumulation at all.

April's nothing! In 1977 Boston had snow in the second week of May (and
Worcester got over a foot!).

One of my favourite stories. But didn't we in AUE find a couple of
years ago that there was actually no firm evidence for it? The first
really absurdly good British summer I was lucky enough to endure was
in 1976: my first girl was born then, my salary jumped, and the plums
from the garden had a strength and depth of flavour it would have
been hard to fault this side of Eden. And my first mother-in-law
wandered round the place in a state of déshabille which not even my
innate shyness and courtesy found able to tolerate without comment.
But no cricket story at the time.

And in either 1973 or 1974 the New Hartford High School (New Hartford
NY being near Utica NY -- the 'jewel in the navel of upstate New York',
according to Johnny Carson) girls' softball team had one of its last
games of the season snowed out, which must have been in early May.

getting well snowed in)

I don't remember the exact date, but I remember that week in 1975. We
took a camping trip to Ardnamurchan in Scotland around the time of the
Bank Holiday at the end of May. The first day I sat outside the tent in
my bikini (those were the days). The second day we went walking in
shirtsleeves. The third day it rained. And on the fourth day it snowed,
and we set off for home.

That was when we were living in New Mills, not too far from Buxton, and
we had listened to reports of the cricket match in question.

I couldn't find any firm evidence. A quick Google did find many
references including these:

The BBC Weather Centre reports it at <http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/weath
erwise/living/keydates/keydates_05.shtml>:

2 June 1975
Snow fell across the Midlands and south-east England preventing
cricket at Buxton in the Peak Districk.

Here's a more detailed account, from <http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~
taharley/british_weather_in_june.htm>:

"1975 A dry month with a dramatic change from very cold to warm. It
was a cold start to the month, following on from the cold end to May.
Snow fell and lay on high ground in the Midlands on the morning of
Monday the 2nd, with sleet as far south as Portsmouth. Gleneagles
recorded -3.3C on the 2nd. Famously, snow affected play in the County
cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire in Buxton: the game
was abandoned for the day on the Monday because the snow cover was an
inch deep. Snow was reported as fallen at a cricket game at Lords on
the same day and over a large portion of East Anglia, accompanied by
low midday temperatures (2C). Snow lay on the hills around
Birmingham, and was also reported at Portsmouth and Ramsgate. Snow
lay for four days in parts of Scotland. This is the latest reliable
date on which snow has fallen in lowland Britain, and was an
exeptional event, with a return likelihood of 250 years (which is
comparable to the Great Storm of October 1987). [snipped 14 lines of
other June 1975 material]
