I'm guessing that this is a subject that has been gone over a million
times, but let me do it again.

What are the rules regarding comma usage?

I never seem to know when to use them. Any help would be much
appreciated.

Look commas up in the AUE Google Archive and you will find plenty of
information.

Even the most succinct answer to that would be far too long for a newsgroup
message.

First of all, I suggest you check through your writing to identify which types
of comma you're unsure about (you'll find that in many circumstances you are
confident and can eliminate those from your enquiries). There are several types
of commas, some easier to use than others, and there are different rules for
each - as well as many areas where decisions are subjective. There are commas in
lists, parenthetical commas, commas after an introductory phrase, etc.

We could be more helpful to you here if to start with you gave us one or two
particular instances to get our teeth into.

We've got an office manager, in our Estate Office, who uses them, like this,

after every phrase, in a sentence, and it looks, damned stupid, and, so does
she!!

That's how not to use them!

Or worse still she could omit them and all other punctuation
entirely I've known people like that these days it seems there are
more of them than ever what with the internet and all I suspect
AOL has a hand in it as well what is the world coming to anyway
pretty soon we'll be back to pictographs which is sad there aren't
even enough buffalo around to paint pictures of any more even if
you could kill one and so many people all the walls would soon be
filled up

Gad, that's annoying even when you're the one *typing* it!...r

But it's perfectly understandable and a reasonable argument for less

punctuation and greater command of the language so that even fewer such
marks are needed, which would automatically reduce the number of
punctuation errors.

Usually people who do that do that without using any capital letters

either. And there's the folks who use "it's" and "its" wrong, don' get
me started on that.

Gertrude Stein would've admired it, though.
