Rexy, you have clearly done a lot of research into this.
Thank you. That is so much more than any of the other intellectually
dishonest posters could ever state.
Have you never noticed that the two salutes were not the same, that
they differed in both form and mood? The Nazi salute was taut, phallic,
aggressive, with the arm rigid, the palm downwards and the fingers
parallel and pressed together to form a spearhead. The Bellamy salute
was a bad actor of the old school doing Romeo beneath Juliet's balcony:
the lovelorn frown, the arm sweeping outwards and upwards, the hand
open, the fingers limp - 'But soft! One Nation indivisible, with
Liberty and Justice for all!' ('No, no, no! You look like a bloody
barman pressing a bloody glass to a bloody optic, darling. Do it again.
More vim, less gin, please.')
Yes, I wrote the book on your observation. On the surface you are
correct but there is more to it and it is a fascinating story.
http://rexcurry.net/pledgesalute.html
Here is an excerpt about the part that I discovered and that almost no
one knows: James Bailey Upham suggested to Bellamy part of the gesture
(the straight-arm with the palm upward). Upham's suggested gesture
(palm up) was like saying "Here is the flag." It was because of
Bellamy's alteration (the addition of the military salute) that the
pledge evolved into the Nazi-style.
The gesture changed in use, growing into the "Heil Hitler" appearance
because of the military salute (palm down) extended casually straight
toward the flag. Thanks for your relevant question.
You are on slightly more solid ground with all this stuff about
'military socialism'.
Thanks again.
But they were all at it in those days and it seems a bit unfair to pin
Nazism on a mild little chap like Francis Bellamy (who, let us not
forget, ended up working in advertising).
Well, that is why he is known as the local Leni Riefenstahl. And it
wasn't just him, his cousin Edward Bellamy was his cohort and that is
why they are known as the first American Nazis. Remember too that
Hitler was an artist.
you need look no further than Teddy Roosevelt. I am
sure he was more of an influence on Nazism than Bellamy was. (Which is
to say, Roosevelt's influence was slightly less negligible than was
Bellamy's: Nazism's real roots were in German Romanticism.)
Perhaps you underestimate the fact that Francis and Edward worked
together to promote their dogma and that Edward wrote the international
bestseller "Looking Backward" that was translated into every major
language including Russian, Chineses and German. That means that the
Bellamys influenced the socialist tio of atrocities responsible for
the socialist Wholecaust (of which the Holocaust was a part): the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics, 62 million slaughtered; the Peoples'
Republic of China 35 million; and the National Socialist German
workers' Party with 21 million. So, you are limiting yourself to say
that the Bellamys influenced the Nazis. They influended EVERY
socialist hell hole on earth. It would be hard for them to have done
worse than that. |

You are not in it for the facts or for accuracy. You are in it to make
a big mess out of people's loyalties and symbols by promoting socialism
and by covering up for its horrors. There is no farther end to which
your propaganda can aspire. Its sad, really. You've been repeating
crap that you were taught for so long, and refusing to think, that you
probably believe your line of crap and you have no interest in
thinking. Thanks again for not actually disputing a word I said. |

The Roman salute myth might have sprung from the fact that
Francis Bellamy (the author of the pledge of allegiance and of
its original straight-arm salute) was from the city of Rome (in
the state of New York, not in Italy) and people and things from
the city in New York state were referred to as "Roman" and still
are today.

Michael Medved... isn't he the popular movie reviewer who occasionally
subs for Rush Limbaugh?
ObAUE: AIR, "medved", Russian for "bear", derives from a word for "honey
eater", the name of the bear being taboo in certain early Indo-European
cultures. On the Germanic branch, the bear was referred to as "the brown
one".

conceding my points and for not disputing a word of it, in that you

your own mind alone. Everyone else knows that you have been shown to

Although he sounds loony tunes, I find it somewhat interesting that he
writes quite well. From a strictly English standpoint, I'd find little
to dispute with in his posts. Since he is clearly not a dummy and is
certainly not dull, I am reluctant to place him among the bores in my

I went to his websites and searched GoogleGroups for his posts. Dullsville.
He's a broken record, and not even a good one at that. As I said, he's
wasting his energy. I noted his good qualities, and instead of engaging me
on an intelligent level, he spouted some more of his automated dogmatic
responses. He also mashed his ramblings directly into the text from my
posts. I feel no need nor desire to deal with that. He's only the second
or third person in AUE I've plonked. I'm not happy about doing it, but I
don't think he's going to vary his tune. I'm sure the Libertarian Party is
embarrassed.
