hey there,
I can't quite make out the meaning of the expression "(to) hit the lights"
I found it in different contexts, and I don't know whether it's, like, plain and simple "(to) switch on the lights", or maybe it's something else...
For instance, it's in Bruce Springsteen's "Highway patrolman" (awesome song!):
"[...] Well I went out and I jumped in my car and I hit the lights
Well I must of done one hundred and ten through Michigan county that night [...]"
if it meant like I said, it'd make perfect sense, but... I don't know, I'm just not quite convinced...
ok, thank you in advance to everyone
Francesco

It does mean either open (turn on) or close (turn off) the lights, though more often than not the latter, laced with a sense of urgency or detachment.
I haven't heard it used in any other context. |
