the Pireus,

Not in English, it isn't.

Quote:
the Hague,

Anglicisation from Dutch of Den Haag which is an abbreviation
of s'Gravenhage which, I think, means "The Count's Hedge".
Obviously this would naturally become shortened to "The Hedge".

Similarly Den Bosch is an abbreviation of s'Hertogenbosch
so "The Duke's Wood" becomes "The Wood".

Perhaps Den Helder is also short for something but, if so,
I don't know what.

Never 'eard of it.

In English placenames, over time it is normally the "the" which is
dropped, so "The Queen's Ferry" becomes "Queensferry".

Interesting place name near here: Idridgehay (pron. Irridger, roughly),
which is an AS counterpart: Edrich's Hedge. Named after the former
cricketer, IIRC.
