Is there any difference between "ran the faster" and "ran faster" here?

-------
`What trial is it?' Alice panted as she ran; but the Gryphon only
answered `Come on!' and ran the faster, while more and more faintly
came, carried on the breeze that followed them, the melancholy words:--

`Soo--oop of the e--e--evening, Beautiful, beautiful Soup!'

-------

Thank you.

I think this is a contraction of, or perhaps was meant to read, "all the
faster". I would take it to mean that the Gryphon was spurred into running
faster by Alice's question. So as a description of what took place, there is no
difference, but "the faster" gives us a little emotional or motivational
context.

It suggests an action in contradiction to what would be expected. Instead of
slowing down in response to Alice's question, the Gryphon ran "all the
faster."
