LONDON -- Some people bring flowers. But when Melvyn Reed's three wives
showed up to visit him at the hospital, they brought the unexpected end to
his years as a bigamist.

Isn't there a Limerick that covers the situation?
There was an old colonel from Lyme
Who once had three wives at one time.
When asked "Why the third?"
He said, "Well, one's absurd
And bigamy, Sir, is a crime!"

Why isn't Melwyn Reed called a trigamist?

Coming at it from a different angle: why is he not a trigonometrist?

I can't answer this, but just to let you know that you're not alone,
precisely the same question occurred to me when I read about him.

Cos he obviously didn't figure out all the angles before he went
off at a tangent and committed a sin.

Ah, yes: the son of the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons
of the squaws of the other two hides.

You can if you want. The word seems to have fallen out of favour, being
recorded in OED from the 17th Century and as recently as the 19th. And,
yes, they have quadrigamist. And, no, I'm not going to check through for
all the other possibilities.

He is. A Google News search for trigamist gives 4 articles, all
relating to the Melwyn Reed case, e.g.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=358877&in_page_id=1770
It would appear that he'd arranged for his wives to visit at different
times, but things didn't quite work out as he intended... |
