Queen of the Dogs, innit?...gender's wrong...and I don't even think "Perra"
would have the same connotations in Spanish; there's a soft-porn video with a
woman who wears a mask and writes her initials in things with a sword, entitled
"The Adventures of Zorrita"...the title had unintentional consequences, since
"zorra" (female fox, aka "vixen") has much the same meaning in Spanish that
"bitch" has in English....r |

Aussie who insulted a pom 'is a racist'

An Australian cricketer who called an opponent "a pommy git" has been
found guilty of racism.

I don't know what is meant by an "Australian cricket"? If the cricket
can talk...shouldn't its OWNER who it is mimicing be the one that is
getting in trouble for being racist? I mean, in America, PARROTS can
talk, but crickets CAN'T! If I had a pet parrot and it started calling
my cleaning lady a spic, then *I* should get in trouble for racism, I
think...
I'm still kinda confused about how a talking cricket is going to get in
trouble for being racist, but whatever...I guess Australia has MAD
WHACK rules!
Also, I don't understand what "pommy" OR "git" means, or what is meant
by a "cricket opponent". WHAT exactly is racist about this post? Is
there some sarcasm I'm missing...confused...help! And, least but not
least, WHO'S "Joey"? ME??? Who are you? I've never seen you here
before, I don't think. Sorry if I forget.

It's "cricketer" - a person who plays cricket. Cricket is a sport
played by countries which were once part of the British Empire. A
cricket opponent is somebody on the opposing team.

"Pommy" or "pom" is Australian slang for "English", and it's intended
to be rude although I've never understood why I would be offended by
being compared to an apple. "Git" is an all-purpose term of abuse
which we have discussed here in the last few days.

I had always thought that Pm was from Pompey - itself a corruption of
Portsmouth, home of the British Navy and therfore(?) a term for a
British sailor (cf Malay: mat salleh). But before stating this I Googled
and found that I am way off; the most accepted source is "pomegranate"
from the rhyming with "immigrant". Sounds a bit of a stretch to me. |

Another folk etymology is that it comes from POME, an acronym for
"Prisoner Of Mother England". The RHUD says "corroborating evidence
for any of the numerous fanciful etymologies proposed for the word
[pommy] is so far lacking."

True. Pom or Pommy is no more rude really than Aussie or Kiwi.
A git however is a term for 'bastard', although I don't consider that very
rude anyway.
Given the comments that people make to each other in cricket, I would think
an Aussie cricketer calling a pom a "Pommy git" to be relatively
good-natured and friendly.

It's not generally intended to be rude; it is most often simply a
nickname or headlinese shorthand, and it requires a particular context
or tone of voice to make it insulting (as in the example that prompted
this thread). As headlinese, I get the impression that it is being
progressively supplanted by 'Brit'.

This thread reminds me of the (not seen lately) bumper sticker
"Zionism is Racism". How about "Tribadism is Racism"? |
