Why would an utterly unfrivolous man devote years of his life making up
tories about people who never existed? "I rally just have a motivation to do
different things," he says, "I never did study anything in college except
how to be a naval officer and a nuclear physicist. But even when I was at
the Naval Academy, my grades __________ because I was constantly reading
literature."
(A) suffered
(B) rose remarkably
(C) were brilliant
(D) revamped
What is the answer?
Your response will be much appreciated.

What do you think? Were his grades good or bad, given that he was
constantly reading literature? (The previous sentence tells you he's
not talking about grades in literature courses but grades in naval
science and physics.)

I'm repeating my AUE reply here, for completeness:
| Quote: | D is not possible as it's grammatically incorrect. The other three
all make perfect grammatical sense, and the question of which one is
"correct" depends on what the writer, or the setter of this question,
is trying to prove.
If there is no more context and you are being told that there is one
"right" answer then it's a very bad question. I suspect that the
answer expected is A, because reading literature made the speaker
fall behind in his studies of physics, but unless you have other
evidence for that, I would answer A, B and C.
