Post subject: what is 'say one' |

I came across 'Say one' out of context,
and can't figure out what it means.
But I know what 'Say when' means.

Words out of context are very hard to understand. Consider:
"No matter what you say one should not ..." OK, IMHO there
should be a comma after "say", but I use more commas than the
average bloke.
"Say what!" is common enough, as is "say when".

Why are you so positive about that?

If it is an off-hand context conjectured given,
such as when you want to know which among many,
whatever, the other person would like to have,
is it possible to ask him or her by way of 'Say one'?

I suppose it's possible, but scarcely idiomatic. "Choose/Pick one" or |
"Name one" would be much more readily understood.

Well, since it was admittedly out of context (see original message), it
could have been from a dialog like:
A: I think I'll say a prayer.
B. Say one for me while you're at it. |

OH, now you are giving context. Or don't you realize that?

If the context given 'off-hand' can be a context relevant,
is it Ok to say 'Say one' in the given context? |

The context is that it was stated off-handly and as a complete thought.
