Hi all,
I need some help parsing this:
"This section applies to the payment of any part of the principal or
interest of any obligation or liability founded on a written instrument."
I interpret this as:
This section applies to the payment of any part of the principal or interest
of any obligation (founded on a written instrument) or liability (founded on
a written instrument).
I'm trying to argue my point to someone who parses it as:
This section applies to the payment of any part of the principal or interest
of any obligation.
This section also applies to the payment of any part of the principal or
interest of any liability founded on a written instrument.

I think you're right. The other person would be right if the word
"any" had been inserted before "liability."
The difficulty of establishing a non-written obligation (of the sort
meant) lends further support to your position.
