Is it always possible to omit FOR in time phrases?

I have been waiting half an hour
I have been painting for half an hour

I lived in Madrid for 2 years
" I lived in Madrid 2 years"

Or does it only happen in sentences with the verb WAIT?

I have been waiting half an hour
I have been waiting for half an hour

Is it compulsory to omit it when the person is mentioned?

I have been waiting for Paul half an hour
*I have been waiting for Paul for half an hour
