Molly! With jokes like that, folks will think I'm
your straight man.

Well, I would normally have to pay good money for a

The innuendos are coming thick and fast! I think I'll

No, no! Stand up for yourself, man!

Well, I was thinking that if you can't join it, beat

Or you could just limp off and read one of the Wilt

Ooh! Sharpe!

Yes, a poke with a sharp stick will beat a two-by-four any

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Molly. (You wouldn't be

Dunno about Molly (shoo's a law unto hersen) but I used "dick" as short
for "dictionary".

You have been rather monopolizing this group with your questions which,
on the whole, have been little more than definition requests. Try
http://www.onelook.com/ for your queries, then ask here if you still
don't understand.

I also had in mind the meaning "detective" - and detectives tend to

Great, I was even called a dick. Thanks a lot. However at least one person
noticed that I really use this tool to learn something.
If you get a feeling that excessively, your problem. Who cares, I don't.
But calling names, trying to scare me, or even preaching is worthless. I see
no point in it. Besides, YOU don't know why T is in capital so therefore I
could call you, if I were brought up in the way you were, some names. I am
not going to.

Methinks that's unfair. He is just a thirsty quester for knowledge
and has found that usenet is an inexhaustible fount.

But he does seem to be taking this stream of living water to excess; or
perhaps 'tis we?

Oh, no. Most of the time I just laze on the banks but
now and then I take a sip, or piddle just downstream.

Don't take it too seriously. People in this newsgroup enjoy punning off
each others messages. there's nothing personal in it.

I think we were all aware of this.

Actually this was explained by at least one person. A T-Shirt (original
spelling) is so called because the shape of the garment resembles the
capital letter "T" - calling it a "t-shirt" wouldn't work becuase it
doesn't reemble the shape of teh letter "t". The spelling "tee-shirt" is
simply a phonetic rendering of this.

I think you're in the process of learning something about British

culture. People joke and pun like this without being deadly serious and
without any malicious intent. It's just harmless banter in this
particular newsgroup. If you really want to learn about insults I
suggest you spend some time reading the correspondence in the newsgroups
alt.english.usage and alt.usage.english.

Since you are involved in teaching English I would suggest that the
newsgroup misc-education.language.english might also be useful for you.

You were made the subject of a pun too irresistible to pass over. We
like the occasional pun cascade in this newsgroup, as you may have
noticed.

And we have also pointed you towards other "tools" which you can also
use for that purpose. I'm not sure that the regular inhabitants of this
newsgroup would care to be considered as a "tool" - regardless of its
double meaning.

Nobody has called you names, tried to scare you or preached at you. You
have been given a lot of information and advice.

Of course I do! But somebody else had already provided the answer, so
what would have been the point of my echoing it?
