Fiend's Lair
==
The word 'fiend' has several meanings. M-w.com has
1 a : DEVIL 1 b : DEMON c : a person of great wickedness or
maliciousness
2 : a person extremely devoted to a pursuit or study : FANATIC *a golf
fiend*
3 : ADDICT 1 *a dope fiend*
4 : WIZARD 3 *a fiend at mathematics*
What does 'fiend' mean here? An addict? or a devil? How do you
pick?

The headline in the Post appears to refer to a person who pretended to
be a firefighter when he really wasn't, and made sexual attacks on
someone in a crime described by the Post as "sick". Given that context,
only definition (1) fits the word, specifically (1c).
I wouldn't choose the "addict" definition, since nowhere in the article
does it mention that the person was addicted to any type of drugs. |

Except that "dope fiend" was only one example of an addiction that
would classify someone as a "... fiend". I'm a spades fiend, the
person in question could have been a "sex fiend" ... or whatever.

In the interests of full disclosure, I will also state that I am a sex
fiend, too. |

And in the interests of clarification I will say "not THAT way". |

And is 'lair' a good word or a bad word? Is it a place like a pigpen
or a place we might call a nest. |

In the accused's case, he's more of a "rape fiend".
