Post subject: «rope bed» in Italian |

Hello everybody,
does any of you know how is a «rope bed» called in Italian? I know what
it is but couldn't find a good equivalent in my own language.
Thank you very much,
Claudia

I don't, or I don't think I do, unless you mean a hammock. What is it? |

Pardon a Yank butting in - there is a type of bed or cot (only large enough
for one person and usually hand-made), which in lieu of springs has a sort
of web of ropes to support a simple cloth mattress or pad. They were once
common; some are still around, at least here and there in the States.

They are very common in hot climates, Arabia and similar countries. They
can be used without a mattress, when ventilation is more important than
warmth.

Jonh, Ken and Dave, I thank you very much for your answers.
After some more reseach work I found out here in Italy we don't appear
to have an equivalent but have to use a circumlocution. So, as I'm
translating a novel (The Widow of the South by Hicks... such a cheerful
title, isn't it?), I'll go for a simple «letto» (bed).
=) Thank for your help! I owe you one.
