If I asked "cola on the rocks" would it be funny, considered humorous,
regular or pathetic?

Or is it better to just ask 'cola with ice, please'

"On the rocks" is generally a phrase used with whisky or other

spirits, although there's nothing wrong with "cola on the rocks". It
would be more usual to ask for "cola with ice".

In addition, "on the rocks" is a phrase of American origin and i believe

that now it's regarded there as a bit old-fashioned.

I think I'd be more likely to ask for `a Coke with ice', frankly. In fact,
I'd ask simply for `a Coke', and then would say `Yes, please' if they
offered ice, and ask for it (`Could I have some ice with that, too, please')
if they didn't.

Pathetic, I think. Only whisky - and perhaps some other spirits - are
commonly asked for "on the rocks".

Yes.
