Post subject: What is the name of a kind of clothing for a cowboy? |
|
|
In old western films I saw a kind of clothing which a cowboy wore when
riding a horse and looked like covers of trousers which were separated into
two parts - for left and right legs.Does anyone know the name of this
clothing?
Thanks

Chaps. See: http://www.bucklesofestes.com/images/827f.jpg
Cowboys wore leather chaps to protect their legs.

....from insects and brush, not from any chafing the horse might cause.

[COD10]
chaps
· pl. n. short for chaparajos.
chaparajos /%Sap@"reIh@Us, %tS-/ (also chaparejos)
· pl. n. N. Amer. leather trousers without a seat, worn by a cowboy over
ordinary trousers to protect the legs.
– ORIGIN C19: from Mex. Sp. chaparreras, from chaparra (with ref. to
protection from thorny vegetation: see chaparral).

From an old book of jokes my grandmother had:
Q: "Why do cowboys walk bow-legged?"
A: "They have chapped hips."

And, in particularly bad country for thorns, sometimes "taps" to
protect the toes. Short for _tapas_, I believe.

What is the origin of "caps" for protecting heads?
