With my down with a cold, I'm doing the grocery shopping. I hate
doing this. Hate it.

One of the items on the list was "coffee". Normally, a no-brainer
since I know that means a red three-pound can of Folger's. I've never
actually read the label, but I know what the can looks like.

Folger's is not shipping coffee. Some plant of theirs is shut down as
a result of Hurricane Katrina. Either the facility was damaged or the
workers were evacuated. I was forced to substitute another brand, and
chose Maxwell House.

Maxwell House offers Bold French Roast, Smooth Master Blend, Bold
Columbia, Rich Original, and Rich Lite. How do you decide from these
names which can to choose?

Is "Bold" a good thing in coffee? How does Maxwell House embolden
coffee? Is there a hint of saltiness in bold coffee? Sauciness,
even? "Rich" sounds good. I think I heard somewhere about the rich,
full-bodied flavor of coffee being good. But neither Rich Original
nor Rich Lite gives any indication of being full-bodied. Maybe that
Rich Lite is less than full-bodied. Whatever that means.

How is coffee roasted in the French style? Is there, say, a
Portuguese style of coffee roasting? What do the French know about
coffee, anyway? They must not even like the stuff since every movie
I've seen where someone is drinking coffee in France has them drinking
coffee out of cups the size of one of the things that comes with a
bottle of cough syrup. Anyway, I thought we don't like the French
anymore. (Ha!)

I chose Rich Original because it was on sale. I figure they just
divert the spout from the grinding machine to different colored cans
anyway. I'll ask a Maxwell House salesman if I ever find one. I'm
also going to ask him why Folger's comes in a 3 lb 4 oz can, and
Maxwell House sells theirs in a 2 lb 7 oz can. They kind of look the
same size, so the sale price probably just reflects that there is less
product in the can.

I hope my wife gets well soon. I was half and hour just in the coffee
aisle.

Folger's comes in a 3 pound

I don't know much about coffee, but I think "French roast" means
burned. Or burnt.

There's a "you don't get down from a horse" joke here, but with a cold

Sorry, but you don't get any pity because once my wife sent me to the store
for panty-liners. Go look at THOSE shelves.

For you, I'm looking at

http://www.maxwellhouse.com/maxwellhouse/page?siteid=maxwellhouse-prd&locale=usen1&PagecRef=434

....the coffees are classified in tiers headed "Smooth", "Rich", "Bold" and
"Flavored"...assuming you're not after hazelnut or vanilla, the first three are
also captioned "mild", "medium" and "dark"....

"Smooth", described as "smooth, satisfying taste and aroma" contains only
"Smooth Master Blend"....

"Rich", explained as "rich and balanced" contains "Rich Original" and "Rich
Lite"....

"Bold" is claimed to mean "deep, full-bodied, bold taste"; it includes the
French and Colombian varieties....

If you hover your mouse-pointer over the pictures of the cans, you get a more
specific description of each variety...we've noted here recently how difficult
it is to describe "purple" in words, so it should come as no surprise that
verbal descriptions of flavors are even more subjective (check out newsgroups
for wine-tasters for an extreme instance of this problem)....r

"Lite" is, AFAIK, part caffeined and part decaffeinated. Half-and-half,
so to speak.

No, that's Italian. Over here French and Colombian are always safe
bets. Oh, except I forgot Americans don't like coffee...hmm...oh,
well, should be tolerably localized if you make it quarter-strength.

(Note for Brits etc who came in late: Maxwell House is real coffee in
America, not instant. See aue a few months ago.)

Easy. You don't choose any of them. Good coffee companies do not use names
like "Smooth Master Blend".

Well, sure, but they never give you that, do they? They always leave
one essential detail that puts you in a quandary. Brand name, check.
Light Days, check. What's this? Regular or menthol?

Not only that, but they don't tell you what aisle things are on. You
go up and down aisles wondering if panty liners are in feminine
hygiene products or in cleaning supplies.

Oh, you think that absurd? The stocking clerks are quite capable of
putting panty liners in cleaning supplies and then spreading the word
to the women and not the men. Gives both groups a sense of power.

I'm an asker. I take my list and go straight up to some woman shopper
and ask "Where would dried apricots be?" The stock clerks are never
around to ask. They're up there on the catwalk behind the one-way
glass watching men wander around trying to find panty liners.

I used to ask older women on the premise that younger women would
think I was making advances and call Security. Now I ask younger
women because the older women say things like "Over on aisle 7. My
Morty used to like dried apricots, but he's gone now. Is your wife
still with you?"

Well that was the problem, you see. You could know the brand *and* the style
and STILL be confronted with a dozen varieties. Go take a look some time.

And there was no squeamishness involved at all. I saw right away which kind
I would use myself, if I used them.

I'm a 100% Columbian myself, per the test. "You've got a strong sense of
adventure," it said, and "you want to experience all that life has to
offer." A cup of 100% Columbian "is just as exotic as your plans,
dreams, and journeys."

Well, the coffee may be fine, but something doesn't seem quite right.
For one thing, I don't want coffee that's "just as exotic as my plans,
dreams, and journeys"; I want coffee that could make *me* just as exotic
as they seem to _think_ my plans, dreams, and journeys are.

Maybe if I add a bit of Drambuie to that 100% Columbian...
