Post subject: English Dictionary 1810-1820? |
|
|
I'm trying to find an English dictionary
from around 1810-1820 to download.
Unfortunately, every time I try searching
for "old english" dictionary, I end up finding
dictionaries of "old English", quite a different thing!
If anyone knows of any links thanks,
otherwise, I will keep searching.

Webster's American dictionary of 1828 is on-line here:
http://www.christiantech.com/
but it's searchable, not what I'd call downloadable. On-line
dictionaries aren't like wordlists, to download and manipulate. I don't
know if there are any historical dictionaries that are available in such
a way. You could try hunting here:
http://www.alt-usage-english.org/intro_b.shtml#Wordlists
If you find something, maybe you could let us know.

Webster's, of 1828, is searchable via http://www.christiantech.com/ |
although you can't download the whole thing. It is available on CD
from the same people for $25. Ignore the religious front end - I don't
believe that there is any truth at all to the suggestion that Webster
"used the Bible as the foundation of his definitons".

Many thanks to everyone for assistance in my
search for 1810-1820 English Dictionary.
Online is insufficent, I will need to download
it. I will investigate the Webster 1828 link.
Thanks Again.

I've read the introduction in the real, not just the Donniatic
electron, cheapie version. Webster was a religious man, as were most
people of that day and age. The Bible played an important part in many
of Webster's definitions; that much is clear when you read the 1828
edition.

Buy the mother. A copy in decent condition isn't prohibitively
expensive.

Just try specifying the era, or go to a book sales site that
gives you the option of choosing how far back the work you're seeking
was published. |

Fair enough. Me, I'm an old-fashioned bastard who likes the type of
dictionary I can hold in my hands.
A friend of mine has a copy of what you're after, by the way. It is
true, however, he won't part with it for love or money. I've asked
more than once. So perhaps an edition isn't as easily obtainable as I
implied.

I have a de facto thesaurus from 1830-ish, hard copy -- Can it be that
different from what you want? Any words in mind?

I should have been more explicit but could not resist
the hilarious self deprecation. I need a computer version
so that I can add the words to an English
Language word historical database that I'm builiding.
Thanks

Thanks, I should have been more explicit - I require an online copy I can
download so that I can add the words to a database that I'm
building.
Thanks again

Just out of vulgar curiosity, I'm intrigued by your database. They
say the latest version of the Oxford English Dictionary on Historical
Principles cost them 34 million quid; so, if you plan to compete, you
may need deep pockets.
