What you may owe on student loans has nothing to do with getting new
ones, unless you are in default.

If the cost of attendance at your school exceeds your EFC, you are
eligible for financial aid for the difference.

The school decides what type of aid to give you, and how much, but at a
minimum you will get a Stafford Loan, subsidized or unsubsidized. As a
freshman one gets $2,625, sophomore $3,500, and $5,500 as a junior or
senior. Graduate students have higher levels.

If you are in default and arrange an acceptable payment plan, or better
yet pay it off completely, then you can borrow more.

You'll want to do this quickly, so that your record will be up to date
when they check your history as part of determining aid.
