Post subject: Strange RP |
|
|
I was watching Question Time recently(maybe the most recent episode),
and a chap came on who spoke RP but with a strange variation.
Firstly, he said "Of" like "Off"(always), and secondly, said "about"
with the first syllable of "able".
So, he said sentences like:
"I know off it, but I know nothing aybout it." Sometimes he would
neutralise the start of "about", but whenever he didn't it was clearly
"Ay".
Has anyone else heard this?

Who was it? Is he a potential Tory leadership candidate?

I don't remember. He was on Newsnight two or three nights ago, and is
square-faced, well over forty, and has trim black-greying hair. He sat
to the right of centre table, but not at the end. I think he was sat
next to the presenter. I tried to make a mental note of his name but
instead fell asleep.

ANDREW LANSLEY MP : says "of" as "off" and "aybout" whenever the first
vowel's not neutralised -- It's like he's been subjected to some sort
of experimental simplified phonics class or something.

Ah, the "political a". I've noticed that some politicians do tend to
pronounce the definite article to rhyme with "say" in all positions.
I do that rarely, and only for emphasis, and would probably deduct a
mark for it if I were examining a foreign learner's spoken English.
I think it may be one of those odd little fashions which spring up in
the Westminster village -- like non-Scots using "outwith", which
we've commented on in AUE or AEU or both. I don't know if this one
has a party bias.
