Is there a tax defered education plan that is "self directed" and
permits you to select "any common stock" as your choice of investment.

No. I know of only two types of tax deferred education accounts: 529
Savings Plans where the plan you choose picks the mutual funds in which
you will be invested; and there are also Coverdell Education Savings
Accounts that seem to be only for savings accounts.
