Post subject: Parking spaces are hardly taken. |
|
|
Hello.
When you say 'parking spaces hardly taken', does it mean that there are
many parking spaces available, or that it is hard to get a parking
space?
English is not my first language, and it seems that it can be
interpreted as both ways.
Thanks in advance.

spake thusly:

It's not something which a native English speaker would write, so
it's difficult to know what the author meant.

Whileit's not how anyone would phrase it,I'd say it meant there were many
spaces available.

While not a "normally spoken" phrase, it would certainly mean there
are many spaces left in which to park.
If parking in a public lot costs five dollars and parking on the
street is free, you can be sure that the parking spaces in the lot
would be hardly taken.

"Hardly" means "almost not at all".
I had fifty dollars this morning, but by the end of the day, I had
hardly any money left.
"Hard" means difficult.
It's hard to park at the mall just before Christmas. |
