When Americans count with their fingers they start with the index
representing 1, middle finger as 2, ring finger as 3, little finger as
4, and finally the thumb as 5.
When the French count with their fingers, they use the thumb for 1,
index for 2, and so forth.
What system do the British ordinarily use? It's clear from your post
that the NHS counts the little finger as 5, but is that true of the
British public?

I believe Italians count as do the French. I've observed Asians to
count, pinkie 1, ring - 2, middle 3, index 4, lastly thumb five.

I' from Taiwan and we always count from the thumb first. It's just like
the way the French do.

I've forgotten whether it was this group that some time ago discussed the
two ways of notating piano fingering. I was brought up (1940 onwards) on
printed music that showed the thumb as + and the index finger as 1 (so 4 for
the little finger), but nowadays most (all?) publishers use 1 for the thumb
(so 5 for the little finger).

Are you in LeftPondia or RightPondia?
I had piano lessons in the 1960s and the only notation system which I
saw was thumb=1, index finger=2 etc. I'm RightPondian.

Have you ever seen old photos of Edwardian Ladies wearing hats a bit
like Mr D. Vader's headgear of preference, dresses which cover the
ankles, and beads hanging down their artificially-flattened chests to
dangle at the knee? That was how my piano teacher Mrs Dinnage dressed
in 1968. I think the books she used were just as old.
