Post subject: Pronounciation of "source" |
|
|
Hi all,
in Italy I hear many people pronouncing "source" as /surs/ like it if
was written soors. Even fans of open-source software pronounce it
open-soors . Is this pronounciation accepted or anyway used in any
english-speaking places? Every dictionary I look into, reports /sors/ or
at most /sours/ as pronounciations.
TIA

Isn't there an Italian phrase to cover it?
My personal itch is router. I always thought it was pronounced ROWTER
the US way, rather than the British pronunciation which aught to be
ROOTER. A term not widely used in non computer circles, although the
term "route" appears often. |

For what it's worth, my mind's ear hears the computer kit as "rooter" -
- I'd be amazed to hear someone in the UK go into PCWorld and ask for a
"rowter" -- but I use "rowter" for the workshop power tool.

Yep. A router routes and a router routs.

Growing up in New Jersey, we had Rowt 1 and Root 95. It's just the
way it was said. I think both are correct, depending on your
neighborhood. |

- The computing device "router" = roo-ter (rhymes with scooter).
- The woodworking device "router" = row-ter (first half rhymes with
cow).

.... except for those people who pronounce "cow" to rhyme with "coo".

"Source" is never pronounced with the vowel of "you" or "rule" in the
English-speaking world. It is pronounced with the same vowel as in
"force" and "sort."

"Never" is a risky word to use in this neck of the woods.
I don't think "source" rhymes with "force" or "sort" in many (all?)
Scottish accents, some accents in Northern Ireland, and possibly some
others.
The vowel sound is, if I remember correctly, a diphthong -- the "you" or
"rule" sound gliding into a schwa.
