Post subject: What is the proper word for some meaningless text, but neces |
|
|
Hi,
My question is this.
I have to write some "text" in a re-opened computer file, otherwise the
system will re-close the file when it does some routine work at midnight.
This is a kind of redundant, text that does not mean any thing otherwise.
Is there a particular generic term in English to describe such "writing"?
Thanks in advance.

Filler
Padding
Probably the best known passage used for such purposes is what is known
as "Lorem ipsum" from the words which begin the passage. It's a slightly
mangled excerpt from a work by Cicero, not that it matters, and Google
will show you many examples, including short programs which will
generate Lorem to your heart's content.

I think computer science people would refer to such text as "dummy". |

If it's a MAC, the term might be: Applelogya. |

It's not specific to writing, as it can refer to images as well, but
"placeholder" is such a term. Numeromania's suggestion of "dummy" is
also good.
