Post subject: Best possible fee-based NNTP servers, costs?? |
|
|
Hello everyone. I have been using, for NNTP in Forté Free Agent, a
free server (news.aioe.org) that has proved to have numerous
shortcomings. I have already tried to ask about whether there might
be another free server that perhaps I could use, but to no avail, and
now I want to see if I could possibly use a server that costs money
(not that I know who would be paying for it). We need to find out
what things would be the best of such possibilities, and we need all
information about the cost of the server (a low cost would be better).

Daniel, try Teranews
http://www.teranews.com/
which charges a registration fee of $3.95 for 50 Mb download per day,
which is more than enough for text groups. I have a registration
with them for the times when I am travelling and they have always
given me a satisfactory service. Even if you don't use it long term,
it's probably worth $3.95 as a backup service.

Newsgroups". See http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php
If all you want is text groups the cheapest option will be fine, so
that's $2.95 per month.
You can get similar deals in lots of places - the great majority of
them are actually outsourced to the same provider (Giganews).

I have used Individual.net with good results:
http://news.individual.net/index.php
It is 10 euro per year.

Giganews has various options. My ISP uses Giganews, but they have only
signed up for the cheapest option, so only two connections are allowed
at a given time. Since I sometimes run both Agent and Xnews at the
same time, a wrong click and I get a '480' error. On the plus side,
their article retention times are more than reasonable.
Best regards,

I use news.individual.net which used to be free and is still only 10
euros a _year_ for all the (text-only) Usenet you can eat.
I think some of the registration was in German, but not much, and it
was very guessable.

Define "best". A good, inexpensive option for text-only newsgroups is
http://news.individual.net
That's the one that I use currently.

I use the one provided by my ISP,but I used news.individual.net prior to the
registration fee. It was excellent. Once you have it, you can use it with
any internet connection you like. I was posting stuff through it when I took
my laptop to Hong Kong, after subscribing to a local ISP, even though I
signed up in the UK using another one. You get a username and password, and
the news feed address that you need to set up in whatever news client you
use.

They are often down or posting doesn't work right. I guess essentially
free, what do you expect, but they could at least update their service
issues webpage to reflect knowledge of whatever the issue is bloody this
time.

You might want to try this one, suggested by Isabelle Cecchini in a
post a while back. She wrote:

It's also very reliable, does a good job of eliminating spam, and
has excellent retention and completeness. If binaries are a
consideration, you might look into Newsguy.

My recollection is that if there was any, it was in the Firstgate
Click & Buy registration that was part of the process.

Because of the amount of abuse lately, the ability to sign up for an
account has been terminated.

I have been reading through this thread since I posted the original
message, and I can now see that quite a bit has been mentioned about
news.individual.net. I am considering using this server for my NNTP
(is it very widely used?). I am told that later today I will meet
with Judy, our unit manager, and Teresa[1], the treatment-team leader,
to discuss the possibility of using the server Individual.net
including how we would be paying for it.
[1] Pronounced "Teressa", surprisingly enough. Like "Vanessa".

(That surprises me, too.)
But, Daniel! If you need a few dollars to get onto
news.individual.net, some of us have already offered to help out.
Just ask.

It's pronounced that way in Virgil Thomson's opera *Four Saints in Three
Acts* (libretto by Gertrude Stein), which is American
through-and-through. (The person in question is St. Teresa of Avila.)
