Hi, there,
Please help me answer my question.
I put my clothes outside in the sunshine ____ they will dry more
quickly.
a) so that b) since c)for
The correct answer is a. I am wondering if the answer "b" or "c" is
correct when the two words mean "because".

Hey you won't get many marks for outsmarting your English teacher!
a) You are right, (a) is correct.
b) "Since" can mean "because" so (b) is also correct, but less natural
than (a).
c) "For" meant "because" in olden times. You can't really get away with
it today. |

1. You are right. All three alternatives are grammatically
correct i.e. break no rule of English grammar.
2. Solution A is semantically correct, i.e. is the form
EFL speakers are likeliest to use. But there are small
differences in meaning between each of the three
grammatical solutions: i.e. B or C might be used for
special reasons (not suggested here.)

b) is equally correct sentence with a slightly diffferent meaning from a)
c) sounds archaic.

The only good choice is (a), because "so" carries the idea of "outside
in the sunshine" into the second clause. The other two answers would
be acceptable (with a comma after "sunshine") if you added "there" or
"that way" (or "so", although it seems old-fashioned) after "quickly",
to specify how it is that they will dry more quickly. |

In written English, I would say a) should be just "so" since
the "that" is useless, but it is common in speech.
To muddy things further, you could also just insert the word
"that" in the blank and it works (but, like "for," sounds
archaic). -Wm |

I'd recommend lu and anyone else who'll listen not to use "since" when
they mean "because". It's a bad habit to get into, because it can result
in ambiguity or confusion. If you mean "because", say "because".

I have the impression that c) is not all that archaic in AmE. All three
choices are valid, but a) is the most commonly used one.

A is correct because "so that" means "because of that"
a) so that = 所以, 因此
Put on a sweater, so that you won't catch a cold. 穿件毛衣, 免得著涼了.
b) since = now that = 既然, 由於
Since we missed the bus, let's take the subway. 既然沒趕上巴士, 我們去搭地鐵.
I slept the whole day, because I wasn't feeling well. 我睡了一整天, 因為不舒服.
c) for = because of = 因為
The things you do for love.
So, can you see the difference? |

I'd recommend lu and anyone else who'll listen not to use "since" when
they mean "because". It's a bad habit to get into, because it can result
in ambiguity or confusion. If you mean "because", say "because".

However 'since' is established usage in mathematics and logic, or at
least it was when I did it. For example, 'A=B since A=C and B=C' is
fine since there is no possibility of confusion.

That isn't so, at least in British English, if I have understood the example
correctly.
"So that" as a two-word conjunction introducing clauses of "purpose" is
correct in written and spoken English; plain "so" is used informally in
speech, but is usually regarded as sub-standard (especially in writing) and
should probably be avoided by foreign learners.
Plain "so" used as an adverb, meaning "in this way" or "therefore", is
correct. Example: "I put my clothes outside in the sunshine; so they will
dry more quickly" (i.e. "... and this means that they will dry ...").
Admittedly the two senses are confusingly similar.

I think a) is really the only fully correct answer as both b) and c)
require an additional word, eg:
I put my clothes outside in the sunshine since _thus_ they will dry
more quickly.
I put my clothes outside in the sunshine for _there_ they will dry
more quickly.
I cannot agree that "for" sounds archaic, seems quite normal to me -
but perhaps I'm archaic - am eligible for a 'bus pass at the end of
this week!

In the U.S. we're usually taught to remove every instance of
"that" we can while maintaining the meaning of the sentence.
In this case, the word 'so' appears to be used to mean "in
order that" (def. 18 in my dictionary, which does note it is
often followed by "that") -Wm |
