Well a hush fell over the pool room
When Jimmy come boppin' in off the street
And when the cuttin' was done, the only part that wasn't bloody
Was the soles of the big man's feet
He was cut in 'bout a hundred places
And he was shot in a couple more
And you better believe they sung a different kind of story
When Big Jim hit the floor

I considered that, but it doesn't specifically specify a knife. From
the same authorial source

He got a custom Continental.
He got a El Dorado, too.
He got a thirty-two gun in his pocket for fun.
He got a razor in his shoe.

Oh, are we? Then I'll have to mention the excellent "This is England" by
the Clash. "This is England, this knife of Sheffield steel..."

It's on "Cut the Crap," though, which isn't _really_ the Clash.

Bill Clinton did, in (presumably) 1992, play the sax on _The Arsenio Hall
Show_, an extremely culturally-influential TV show of the day that is now
all but forgotten. I'm not sure what he played, but I didn't think he
was very good. Very poor tone; maybe acceptable by Post-Suez standards.
It was enough to get him a Rhodes Scholarship, anyway.

Erk or someone similarly resourceful can look up the dates, but I suspect
that _The Tonight Show_ was still officially being hosted by Johnny Carson
at the time of Clinton's appearance on _Arsenio Hall_. Of course Leno was
a frequent guest host. The famous _Carsenio_ sketch on _Saturday Night
Live_, in my opinion one of the highest points in the history of
television comedy, occurred some years earlier, I believe.

(Guessing, promise:)

1. Clinton once played "Help Me Make It Through the Night" on the sax
on *Saturday Night Live* or Leno or some such?

2. Middle name is Jefferson in both cases?

3. Born on the same day, same year?

4. Something to do with the Chelsea Hotel?

5. Something to do with Little Rock, Arkansas?

I fully believe that you are guessing, as you are nowhere near.

No Googling necessary for me. I know this one, but I won't spoil it for
others.

I didn't know that Krisofferson was always randy.

Ditto. I only know because I read a Playboy article many years ago
concerning Kristofferson (an interview, perhaps). Finally, it comes in
handy.

I think he's played many different cowboys, some of them with other
names.

You could describe either man as a Colossus ...
Or ascribe each man's Independence to a Unilateral Declaration ...
Or just say they were well educated and rumours of getting high on the
High are ill-founded.

I knew that (second letter starts with S) about Kristofferson, and
assumed it was the link that David meant.

However, Clinton did appear on _The Tonight Show Starring Johnny
Carson_ on 7/28/88, and according to a Carson obituary

He made presidential history again in July 1988 when he had
then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton on his show a few days after
Clinton came under widespread ridicule for a boring speech at the
Democratic National Convention. Clinton traded quips with Carson
and played "Summertime" on the saxophone in what was hailed as a
stunning comeback.
