Post subject: which one is correct in this sentence, as much as or as many |

Hi,
I have a question abou the usage of 'as much as' and 'as many as'.
Please read the following sentence and show me which one is correct in
the blank and why, please.
Players run as ________ as 6 or 7 miles during the course of a game.

I'd say "much", since I think of the distance as an amount, and I think that
most other people would do the same.

It's most proper to use "many" when there is a number involved, such |
as in your sentence. Use "much" when there is no number involved, such
as: "He gave me too much food."... Btw, you could also use the word
"far" in your sentence.

Agreed. The choice between "much" and "many" here is determined by
underlying quantity, i.e. distance, not by the unit used to measure it. |

I agree with that general rule, but disagree with its application in |
this case.
The phrase "as ________ as 6 or 7 miles" is not a count of the number of
miles run. The players do not run exactly 6 miles or exactly 7 miles.
They run some distance. 6 or 7 miles is an approximate indication of the
maximum distance. It could be anything between 6 and 7 miles.
This example is deceptive. The fact that integral numbers appear in the
sentence makes it seem that something is being counted. In fact an
uncountable quantity - distance - is being measured.
