BTW, Coop, why is that -- how did Orlando come to be a center for SDAs?
There's got to be a reason. (And why Loma Linda, while you're at it?) |

Rather than copy/paste, I'll give you a link that will explain:
http://www.floridahospital.org/homepage/history.htm (1)
As that facility grew, the SDAs built a large school here and this
expanded the base since the school hired SDA teachers and workers.
Many SDA churches were built and the area became a mecca for SDAs.
There are grocery stores and bakeries that cater to the SDAs. You
can't just pop into Publix and find a wide selection of fake meat
products. Some, but not a wide selection.
I don't know much about Loma Linda, but Loma Linda University Medical
Center is an SDA run medical school. I would imagine the story is
much the same as Orlando's, but Florida Hospital is not part of a
medical school. It is a teaching institution, but not a medical
school.
(1) Not mentioned in this article is that the Sanitarium (locals still
sometimes call Florida Hospital "Florida San") also owned and operated
a facility for Negroes. Negroes were not admitted to the Florida
Sanitarium, but were admitted to a separate (but equal?) facility a
few blocks away. That facility was expanded to include a birthing
facility for Negroes.
Local African American organizations wanted to make part of the old
Negro facility a museum when the building was still standing, but
Florida Hospital quietly razed the facility and built something new on
the location. There's not even a photograph of the old facility in
the hall of Florida Hospital where the history of the hospital is
detailed. |
