This specific usage is by now common.
Steven Pinker's book on language explained the likely
general cause. When in doubt, English speakers usually
make any verb regular, e.g. add -ed to make it
past tense.

That'll be 'world' as in 'World Series' then.
I'll stick with my Strat thanks. I know a lot of people swear by
Telecasters, but a just find them a bit... boxy.

To make a less vague reference:
_The Language Instinct_ by Pinker contains a few chapters that make
reference to this phenomenon. But for a book-length explanation of
his idea (hardly an outstandingly innovative one, please note), then
his _Words and Rules_ is a better source.
