Post subject: What does SHORT mean in "Eat my shorts"? |
|
|
Hello. I'm a South Korean. This is the first time I post a topic in
this group.
I'm watching the Simpsons. Bart says "Eat my shorts" a lot and I know
it's some kind of insult. But I'm just wondering what SHORT means in
this sentence. Do you have any idea? Thank you.

Look at a clothing catalogue. Knee-length
trousers as worn by children and athletes are
generally called "shorts;" so are some varieties
of underwear for men.

(others responded that shorts are underpants, which is true)
The expression was used by Judd Nelson in a movie called "The breakfast
Club" which came out in 1985. Although it's likely much older. So Bart
is not quite the spokesperson for white America.
I suspect it evolved from "eat my dust", when two people are racing in
cars or motorcycles and they create dust as they drive fast.

Thank you Ray, Don and Joe for your help. Especially for Joe for the
detailed origin. I've never expected I could get so many answers this
fast. Thank you again, folks! |

Ray is correct. Shorts here means underpants. It is a euphemism for "kiss
my ass" or any
other insulting directive that involves oral contact below the waist. |

When I was about Bart's age or a little older, some of my peers used
a somewhat coarser variant of the expression: "Eat my crusty shorts!"
I never took to it, though, as it implies a lack of personal hygiene
on the speaker's part, which seemed to me at least as deprecatory as
the intended insult.
