It seems to me that the media have decided as a group to not use the word
pled anymore. It
is now "John Doe pleaded guilty.". Only 770 hits on google news for "pled"
and 20,000 for "pleaded".
For some reason this irritates me. Is there a reason for this change?

Journalists and broadcasters like to use what they regard as natural,
conversational language. "Pled" is probably not used because it no
longer figures in everyday speech.
