Does anyone know what style of spoken British English is taught these days
by Linguaphone and similar "teach yourself" language courses? I see from
advertisements that they have separate courses for AmE and BrE, and my
question could equally be applied to AmE. From the wide range of accents
available, what have become the two de facto standards?

We'll know we have been when BBC announcers say "BirmingHAM" and
"BalHAM".

A *golden* opportunity!
Going OT, the Bee Gees' 'Massachusetts' was, reputedly, a hit
everywhere *except* in Massachusetts!
Is it liked there, please?
Nick
It did fine here and the radio stations still play it.

Thanks - glad you like it (the Bee Gees' record) there, it's one of my
favourites! :-)

The Bee Gees are cool. Lonely Days is their best song for me. But
Massachsetts was a hit here, that rumour you heard was just that.

Oh yes, Lonely's a goodie, as are 'First of May', 'Melody Fair', IMHO -
so many winners, one is spoiled for choice.
Have heard "that rumour" (albeit erroneous!) a few times - thanks,
again, for clearing it up! :-)
