Post subject: Question On Campus Living |
|
|
I will be starting college this fall, and want to live on campus. I am
worried, because of my medical condition: epilepsy. It disables me to
some extent; my neurologist doesn't want me to do certain things, like
climb a lot of stairs or be around very dangerous environments (where I
could hurt myself). I am also not allowed to drive, so living on campus
is about the only way I can go to college. Does anyone here have a
general feel on how how people with conditions are considered for
housing? Does anyone know if I will be allowed to stay on campus or be
able to request a certain dorm hall and floor?
Please e-mail me any advice that is available. |

We could give more on-target responses if we knew which college. This does
vary *a lot* among colleges.

My understanding is that, due to the Americans with Disabilities Act,
every college and every workplace is required to accomodate people
with a medical diagnosis. Contact the college.

I am going to a small, private university, named the University of (my
city). |

Try this website:

Since the laws are federal, I would guess that most colleges have similar policies.

Contact the Disabled Students' Program at your school. They should be
listed under Student Services. Many DS programs help with housing
accommodations and transportation, but they typically have disability
documentation requirements that you will have to meet before you can
qualify for services.
How exciting; it won't be long now!
