My son has become interested in engineering programs and has been using
some of the online software to help point him toward different schools.
The University of Waterloo keeps floating to the top of the lists
provided. I have to admit the usual US ignorance of the Canadian
eduacational system. I understand it is very good, but since I have
never worked with/for anyone from Waterloo I don't even have a biased
opinion yet.

Can someone suggest a comparable US engineering program (undergrad
only) so I can get some idea of what Waterloo is all about?

Many thanks!

So I don't repeat myself (and I'm exhausted and stopped proofreading,
and whinning), please see my response under "1.

"
Another author, "Moca," under the same 1.anik . . . ." suggested good
things too.

We (Moca and I) addressed an engineering student interested in the US,
and how to search for eng. schools.

My career was in higher ed., and Waterloo, respectfully, doesn't
stand-out ( [a] never heard of it and, [b] there are better ones -- and
if you don't apply, you'll never know if you'll get accepted . . .
i.e., Cal Tech, MIT, etc.).

An academic with a broad knowledge of engineering programs should be
familiar with Waterloo. It's a respectable university, with particular
strengths in math and computer science. It is well known within Canada
for the popularity of its co-op programs, where students combine study
with work experience.

As to how it compares with engineering schools in the USA - this is a
matter of personal taste, but one might say that it's comparable to a
high quality state university. If one is interested in Canada there
are other engineering programs equally worthy of consideration and it's
worth doing some further research.

It's also worth noting that the surroundings and atmosphere at the
school will not suit every student. Those who would be happy at a
place like U. of Toronto may not find Waterloo too exciting.

Good luck ....
