Post subject: Law school: What undergrad degree? |
|
|
I'm 47 and back in college at late life. Only part time
for now.... 6 hrs per semester
I'm working on a 4 year degree and have a LONG way to
go as I only have abt 15 hrs so far.
Given that info.... what undergrad degrees allow one to
get into law school? Does it even matter?
Could I have say an engineering or math degree.... and
still go to law school if I so desire later in life? |

I certainly can't claim any current expertise on this topic, but since no
one else has weighed in.....I know a lot of lawyers, many of whom went to
very prestigious law schools. They majored in just about everything you can
imagine, with perhaps a tendency towards political science and history
(which isn't surprising).
This was discussed a few months ago, and I think the conclusion was that
anything that strengthens your ability to analyze information and write
efectively will help. (I also have the impression that if you are ultimately
interested in entering some particular branch of the legal field requiring
technical expertise in a specific non-legal area--entertainment, patents,
whatever--then it might help to have a relevant major. But that's just a
guess. Probably business experience in the field would be even better. Just
another guess.)

To practice as a patent attorney in the United States you need a
science or engineering bachelor's degree, or the equivalent. See the
Patent & Trademark Office web site for more information. |

Any degree is welcome, as long as you can demonstrate
good communication skills and logical thought.
In fact having come from an engineering school,
I heard some places favor such analytical types. |

OK
Thanks to everyone for the advice!
I've don't know where I'm going with my schooling....
but I definitely learned that I'm not boxing myself in
with whatever undergrad degree I get. And that's a
comfort.<G> |
