Good question.
Professors get a lot of emails from prospective students. So many so that
many don't respond.
I'd see if you have any networks to connect you to the professor you're
interested in working with and have that network introduce you. For
example, a professor you had in undergrad can introduce you to a professor
you're interested in working with during grad school.
This is probably an excellent question for your current professors -- how do
they feel about being approached. And what is the best way to approach
prospective advisors.
I didn't talk to any of the prospective professors at schools I applied to
for grad school before gaining admission, but many other students had...
