MIT Accepts 16 Percent of Class of '08 Applicants
and expects 61% yield of the 1,664 thick envelope recipients out of a
total of 10,464 mailings.
42% valedictorians
Mean SAT: 724/759 verbal/Math
7% 1600, 62% had at least one 800.
Applications dropped from 10,547 last year

I read that a few days ago too.
Any interesting point is that the 39% who reject MIT, many mention
"quality of life" as the reason, the amount increasing each year.
But nothing more specific than that. I dont know if this means
people don't like the urban atmosphere, or there is less interest
in tech & engineering in the current IT recession, or publicity
about drinking deaths and suicides with MIT's restrictions on student
life in reaction.
This is mostly an academic question, because MIT could fill its
class several times over with technology enthusiasts and near perfect
SAT scores. Perhaps as they go after diversity of gender, geography
and academic interest, they make more offsers to the less interested. |
