I don't know about Emory, but there is a huge difference in living
environment between UCSB and NYU. If you are from an east coast urban
area, you definitely want to visit SB before deciding to go there.

Anne: I have lived at times in many places from south dakota to washington
dc., minnesota to philadelphia - now living in Boston but with homes in NH
and FLa. (I travel in business) not sure if a visit will tell us that much,
but we are heading there anyway. we have also teed up several other calif
schools. what were your son's other choices.
regarding alcohol, drugs, sex and parties - they are in his HS along with
guns etc, so the character has been determined already. any student in any
setting can get all of the vices they want at any school or setting -
private or public, urban or rural.
what would you consider to be irreconcilable in the east west transition?

True, kids can get anything they want wherever they are. But I have
heard of several people who have quit UCSB because the contant loud
partying laced with alcohol made it impossible to study and sleep. It
can also be very difficult to find friends if most of the students
there have chosen the school for this reputation.

Why the combativeness? I wasn't the one who first used the term, nor
do you have to preach to me, I didn't drink a drop until I was well
over 21 and of course i had no problem being social during college
with plenty of like minded individuals. Not to say that it isn't a
problem sometimes and at some places, but you seem utterly determined
to believe the absolute worst regarding the nature of college students
and drinking.

Ed,
I apologize for my combativeness. I could have phrased that better.
I know college kids can drink responsibly, but how many of them do?
Alcohol is involved in car crashes, date rape, trips to the er for
poisoning. It causes academic problems and social problems. People who
drink make the others around them miserable. People die from alcohol
use. I feel that in most cases, this problem is not taken seriously
enough.

sally - there are two Eds here - this Ed, the parent of the one who started
this thread, is not concerned about alcohol - done subject - my reply was to
Anne regarding the transition from east coast to west coast life.
thanks for your comment - but alcohol is not an issue - I already have
college students and with experience understant the issue to my
satisfaction. But thanks.

That was a poor choice of words on my part. I was thinking more about
the major metropolitan area vs. the "California riviera." UCSB is, of
course, not in Santa Barbara itself. The university is on the beach,
adjacent to the town of Isla Vista which is primarily unofficial
student housing. The University is really its own community, and there
are no big city amenities. I'm not saying it wouldn't be enjoyable for
your student, but there is the possibility that somebody who would
like the excitement of living in Manhattan, with all it has to offer,
would find the environment at UCSB to be somewhat artificial and
boring. You just have to go and see.
My son is interested in UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UCSB, UC San
Diego, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. With my son, daily living tasks
are more of an issue than academic ones, so he would not thrive in a
place like NYU. Even the Berkeley environment is a little much for
him, but he grew up around there and has taken classes there, so he
feels he could handle it (but he probably won't get in).
What other schools are you looking at?

Anne: thanks for the response, both professional and on target. We parents
are so naive and once we understand, it is to late. It is good to
communicate with others searching.
My son is an adaptable student, or could be a final candidate in "Survivor -
the adolescent years". He has all facets of life working well at this time -
except driving.
We have hit both coasts with NYU and Emory on right, and UC - Santa Barbara
and UCLA on the left. Before you say it, these are not really comparable
schools for many reasons - but we have seen them at some point in our
travels and they are "his" targets. Mom and Dad like Georgetown and Wake
Forest - but we do not vote.
After yesterday, NYU visit and interviews, we may have cut to three with UC
Santa Barbara taking the lead. He feels taht NYC is better suited for grad
school than undergrad.
