Fewer students to get into UC
By Associated Press
Budget cutbacks appear likely to force the University of California to
break its long tradition of finding a place for every eligible
California graduate.
"It will be more difficult for applicants to gain admission this
year," UC admissions director Susan Wilbur said Thursday.
Under California's 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education, UC is
supposed to take the top 12.5 percent of state high school graduates.
The system has kept that promise by finding a place at one of its
eight undergraduate campuses for all eligible students, although not
necessarily at the campus of the student's choice.
However, with California in financial crisis, Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger's proposed budget would require UC to reduce enrollment
by 3,200 students this fall. The governor is also proposing raising
undergraduate student fees by 10 percent. |
