I am planning to take my daughter on a one-week vacation trip, to visit
colleges on the East Coast. Her (present) desire is to pursue a law
degree. We (the parents) are both graduates of Engineering, so we are
[almost] clueless, when it comes to what would be needed for a pre-law
possible undegrad option, so here are my two (related) questions:

1. What would be a good one-weeek college visit trajectory, on the East
Coast (i.e. colleges worth visiting, for programs possibly leading to law
schools, afterwards)?
2. What is your experience, as far as a HS junior is concerned, in regards
to being prepared for such a eduactional - perhaps carrer - path (at least
assuming that this student won't change her mind, in the meantime).

So far we have visited two schools in Illinois - U of I @Urbana-Champagne,
and U of C in Chicago (the latter - very, very nice, indeed).

TIA,
papi

In my experience people go into law school after almost any undergraduate
major. (Thinking of lawyers I know, their undergraduate majors included
History, Poli Sci, English, and Classics.) Certainly that was the case with
the people I knew who went directly into law school (Harvard, Northeastern,
University of Chicago). If your daughter thinks she might have an interest
in some particular branch of law, perhaps it would make sense to have an
undergraduate major that related to that area. AFAIK, the most important
things to have are good grades and good LSAT scores and a demonstrated
ability to think and write. This information may be somewhat out of date,
though. Perhaps someone with more recent experience can share it.

One thing I am quite certain of is that unless things have changed
dramatically, no top school has a "pre-law" major.

Two thoughts:

It's a little late for that campus tour. What you are going to see is
buildings, and folks from the admissions office. Most undergrads have
already deserted the campuses, so its going to be difficult to take a
reading.

Second, if your daughter is really serious about law then she might
consider one of the programs that shorten the paper chase by a year.
Three years ago our son was pretty much in the same situation. We did
find that there were several programs for honors students that allowed
a student to go three years to an undergraduate program and then finish
their undergrad degree at a law school while preparing for the law.
Grinnel in Iowa and Pomona in California had such agreements with
Columbia law school as I recall. Our son didn't end up at either.

R. Carriere
