Hello,

I've spent a few hours wading through other postings, cursing at search
engines and finally creating this new topic with fingers crossed.

Anyone out there who can compare notes with me, PLEASE HELP!

I will try to avoid to complain about my own mistakes or the shady
treatment I have gotten from collectors.

Timing is critical because of loan rates about to rise July 1.

Maybe this thread will help others with my situation.

I defaulted years ago on Stafford loans.

I have had wages and tax returns garnished.

I have been haunted and harrassed by DSC -- Diversified Collection
Services -- the last of a line of mysterious collectors.

Unable to find any recourse, I agreed to rehab my loan with the obsene
collection fee, which I rationalized as a trade off to clear my credit
report.

DCS and a previous agency that chased me from job to job gave me scant
information in writing.

I do not know who hold my loans. The Web site that offers to locate it
comes up dry.

I do not know how much of the $23k I owe is fees or principal or
interest.

They will not tell me.

I cannot get what my rates are.

I can't get anything in writing really other than a sum total amount.

I am days away from my 12th required payment to get my loan out of
default.

I want to consolidate it but I want to find out how to do it wisely and
with a lender who will honestly tell me my options -- fixed rates,
length of loan, etc.

Sallie Mae was once involved in my loan, but DCS won't tell me much
more than "the script" nor will they help me or work with me in any
way.

I totally want to pay what I owe, but I don't want to give them a
single cent more or give anyone more than what is rightfully owed by me
from the principal and the interest.

When I google or Yahoo, I get a bunch of sites and I don't know if they
are good or bad.

Anyone out there able to share their experience so I can avoid futher
errors ???

Thank you...

The Federal Student Aid Ombudsman of the Department of Education helps
resolve disputes and solve other problems with federal student loans.

They may be able to help you get some answers to your questions.
