This probably impacts quite a few of us. Apparently a lot of working
students are due sizable tax refunds. I found the article on Taxbrain.com
while I was getting ready to file mine. Hope you get a lot back!

Good to know! Thanks. I don't pay nearly enough attention to this
stuff. I think my parents want to claim me as a dependent again, but
I'm not sure if they can this year since I'm working. I hadn't even
heard of Taxbrain before.

First, for those who want to e-file for free, check out:

http://www.irs.gov

and click on free file.

Second, I personally would feel uncomfortable using any of these services,
out of privacy concerns.

Do you refuse to shop online as well? It's just as safe as that is.

If the security wasn't there, the whole system would collapse
within seconds. And if you're worried about the company itself
misusing your tax data ... well, if they didn't mind the Feds
closing them down and putting them in jail, maybe that would
happen. Seriously though, I think the system is safe and sound, as
long as it's a reputable company. I looked at the TaxBrain site,
and it sure seems to be. They've been around for several years and
they're family owned and fully accredited. Everybody's got to make
their own decisions, though, I guess.

PRIVACY, not security, was the issue I raised.

Yes, but after how many years of misuse?

And how do you know whether a fly-by-night web site is reputable?

Several years? How many?

Family owned? What does that mean and what does that imply about reputable?

Absolutely. Caveat emptor.
