How does that American saying go? "We're such a big country?"
Damn straight! We're the biggest in area and the biggest in
population and the biggest in miliary power and also the shiniest
and the loudest and the best looking. I understand there is some
dispute about some of that, so we plan to let the kids -- the kids
in Ohio, anyway -- know that there's a controversy. But of course
we're right -- we're also the rightest country.

Interesting typo, Bob. My dictionary has:
miliary (adj)
1. like a millet seed in size or form.
2. (of a disease) having as a symptom a rash with lesions resembling
millet seed.
Bet you've got the soy bean market sewn up too.

We also have the most dentists -- because of all the sorghums.

Robert, that is really awful.
I was in DC for a couple of days, moving Ruth out of the dorm, and into
a sublet for a month (yes, I have to go back and do it all again next
month), and, as far as I can tell, every apartment building in DC has a
dentist's office. Do DC people have really bad teeth? Are there enough
people in all of DC to keep those dentists in business?

It's the other way round: we crave & demand preventive maintenance, and
we therefore have really good teeth!
We love the squeaks that hygienists' water-drills make. Visits to the
dentist make us feel clean & worthy & righteous. This is the secret of
why foreigners admire us so. |

Thank you. I try.

Must be.
I think DC still functions somewhat as a central city, at least in
health services, drawing patients from the entire metro area. My
dentist is in Virginia, but he's threatening to retire, and I am
likely to start using a dentist in DC if that happens. Also, I
suppose a lot of people who live in the burbs but work downtown find
it convenient to use dentists near their place of employment. It
adds up.
If you and Ruth expect to have a few spare minutes on your next
sally here, feel free to get in touch. The e-mail address remains
unmunged (it's too late now).
