I've been reading about the "demonstrated interest" factor in
admissions-
that is whether the stuent should contact the admissions office after
the
application to say they are still interested, or visit the campus etc.
One camp says that can increase a student's admission chances,
while others, e.g. Stanford

says that doesnt help and might even hurt.
