I received solicitation in mail to attend a free dinner and seminar for
the parents of college-bound students, sponsored by an attorney. The
letter promises to reveal secrets about college funding, ways to save
thousands in tuition, how to qualify for financial aid regardless of
income, etc.

Please share your experience or insider info about this kind of events.
What are they all about and how worthy are they?

Thanks,

Gene

I remember answering a similar email that someone sent me about those
seminars that are about grants.

Of course they want to draw you to the event so that they can sell you
their book or tape or program or whatever. You're not obligated to do
so though. But this is the same thing that is done by authors and
other events - they draw you in so that they can sell you something.

Basically what they say is true. There are so many scholarships and
fellowships and grants out there for students that it isn't even funny.
While doing research for someone else I found a fellowship that is
offered by an organization in France for an American Student to study
in France for at least 6 months. The objective of this fellowship is
to promote better relations between France and the US and it has been
around since 1997. This fellowship pays for the air fare, gives the
student a monthly stipend plus they provide health benefits! Now how
do I know that? Because I found it by doing some homework on my own.

So what I believe is basically going on here is that the seminar is
being provided of course in the hopes that you will buy their program
or services or whatever but you can also find this information on your
own as well.

Its the kind of thing that is comparable to filing one's income taxes.
Sure you could do it yourself but some people don't want to be hassled
with it (but they want that refund), some are too afraid to do it
themselves and some just don't know how - so they hire someone else to
do it. So that's basically what you are doing here - hiring someone to
do something that you can do yourself.
